New Delhi. Amid the controversy over the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll, or SIR, more than 2,000 citizens have sent an open letter to the Chief Justice of India and other judges of the Supreme Court. The letter demands an immediate halt to the SIR process and an independent inquiry into the functioning of the Election Commission.
The letter has been signed by academics, lawyers, former bureaucrats, social activists, journalists, retired military officers and others. The signatories have raised several serious questions over the Election Commission’s functioning and its management of voter data. They have also sought a broad independent and legal audit of the Commission’s centralised ECINet platform.
The open letter claims that forms related to voter registration were changed during the SIR and that there was disagreement within the Commission over some decisions. The letter has sought a judicial inquiry into these claims. However, these allegations are claims made by those who signed the letter, and no final judicial finding has been issued on them.
Earlier, a Supreme Court bench headed by the Chief Justice had questioned the Election Commission over notices being sent to voters during the SIR and the process being followed. The court had asked the Commission to ensure an arrangement that would build voters’ trust in the process.
