CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi: Police detained more than 80 students protesting in Delhi against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll. The action was taken on November 1 at Minto Road, when the students were trying to march towards Connaught Place. The protest was called by the student organisation DISHA.

The protesting students had gathered at Minto Road demanding that the SIR process be cancelled. They were raising slogans and moving towards Connaught Place. Delhi Police then stopped them with barricades and did not allow them to proceed. Police detained the students and took them to a designated location.

According to police officials, prohibitory orders were in force in the New Delhi district under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. In view of this, the students were stopped from taking out the march. The protesters wanted to reach Jantar Mantar to register their protest in support of their demands.

The student organisation said the SIR process should be cancelled. Raising questions over the role of the Election Commission, the protesters registered their objections to the process of verification and revision of names in the electoral roll.

Different reports gave varying figures for the number of students detained during the action. Local reports said more than 80 students were detained, while other reports put the number at around 100.
