Ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Asaduddin Owaisi’s party, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), has stepped up its political activity. Through a series of rallies in Muslim-dominated areas and sharp attacks on the Samajwadi Party (SP), Owaisi is working to build a separate political base for his party. This strategy has brought into discussion the challenge before SP president Akhilesh Yadav of retaining the support of Muslim voters.
AIMIM’s focus is on Muslim-dominated seats. Owaisi is looking at Assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh where the number of Muslim voters can influence electoral equations. The party has signalled its election preparations from Bahraich’s Matera and Shravasti’s Bhinga seats. AIMIM is also trying to increase its presence through rallies in Azamgarh, Kairana and Rampur. The party’s activities have also increased in districts of western Uttar Pradesh such as Saharanpur, Bijnor, Moradabad, Rampur, Amroha and Muzaffarnagar.
Owaisi’s questions for Akhilesh Yadav: The AIMIM chief has been repeatedly accusing the SP leadership of not giving the Muslim community adequate political representation. He says the Muslim community should not be limited only to electoral support, but should also get proper participation in power and political decision-making. Through these statements, Owaisi is trying to increase his acceptability among the SP’s traditional support base. These allegations are part of political rhetoric, and it is also necessary to take into account the positions of the parties concerned.
What could be the SP’s strategy? The SP faces the challenge of maintaining its broader social coalition along with Muslim voters. The party may try to respond to Owaisi’s allegations through its political representation, organisation and alliance strategy. At the same time, the activity of local leaders and attention to region-wise issues will also remain important for Akhilesh Yadav’s party.
Discussion of a third political option: Political discussions are also under way over a possible understanding between AIMIM and the Azad Samaj Party. If such an alliance takes shape, electoral equations in some constituencies could be affected. However, it would be premature to draw final conclusions on electoral alliances and the actual inclination of voters. In the 2027 elections, the picture will become clear only through candidates, local issues, alliances and voters’ priorities.
