CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Lucknow. Ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Asaduddin Owaisi’s party, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), has taken a new step towards strengthening its organisation. The party has appointed advocate and Mufti Mohammad Osama Nadvi as the Uttar Pradesh state president of its legal cell. The appointment is being seen as part of a strategy to expand the party’s outreach among ulema, madrasas and people associated with religious institutions.
Who is Mufti Osama Nadvi? Mufti Osama Nadvi, who belongs to Khatauli in Muzaffarnagar, is a lawyer by profession. He studied at Lucknow’s Islamic educational institution Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama. He practises at the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court and is said to be known in various religious and legal circles in Uttar Pradesh.
According to AIMIM state president Shaukat Ali, Nadvi has been given charge of the legal cell with the aim of strengthening the organisation and making legal activities more effective. The party hopes that his experience and contacts will prove useful in expanding the organisation.
Strategy to increase contact with ulema and madrasas: According to an Aaj Tak report, AIMIM plans to increase dialogue with ulema, madrasas, khanqahs and responsible people associated with religious institutions in Uttar Pradesh. Considering Nadvi’s educational background and contacts in religious institutions, the party has entrusted him with this important responsibility. The report said his family and institutional links are also connected with some madrasas in western Uttar Pradesh. Through this network, the party may try to take its ideology and political programmes to more people. However, the actual impact of this strategy will become clear only in the time ahead.
Eye on 2027 elections, bid to challenge SP: Owaisi has been continuously active in trying to expand his party’s support base in Uttar Pradesh. Criticism of the Samajwadi Party and its president Akhilesh Yadav has featured prominently in his rallies and statements. AIMIM has continued to raise the issue of political representation for the Muslim community and the need for its independent leadership. In September 2026, Owaisi had also presented his party’s stand on a possible electoral alliance in Uttar Pradesh. Along with expanding the organisation, the party has also kept open the possibility of contesting the election in alliance with other parties.
Hope legal experience will strengthen the organisation: With Mufti Osama Nadvi’s appointment, AIMIM hopes to improve coordination in legal matters and strengthen the organisation at the state level. The party’s strategy does not appear limited only to election rallies, but is also focused on expanding contacts with religious institutions, local networks and the legal sector. It will now be important to see how much organisational expansion follows from the responsibility given to Nadvi, and to what extent AIMIM is able to strengthen its political presence in the 2027 Assembly elections.
