CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal : The Government of India has appointed senior neurosurgeon and Padma Shri awardee Ashok Kumar Mahapatra as the President of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhopal and a member of the Institute Body. A native of Odisha, Dr. Mahapatra received his postgraduate training from AIIMS New Delhi and earned degrees in M.S. (Surgery), M.Ch. (Neurosurgery), and DNB (Neurosurgery).
In his distinguished career, he has held key positions such as Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, Head of the Neurosciences Centre, and Dean of Research at AIIMS New Delhi. In 2017, he performed the historic separation of conjoined twins ‘Jaga and Kalia’ from Odisha in a complex 16-hour surgery with a team of 30 doctors. This remarkable achievement was recorded in the Limca Book of Records.

Dr. Mahapatra has made significant contributions in the fields of neurosurgery, head injury, skull base surgery, epilepsy surgery, and brain tumors. He has published over 870 research papers, authored 16 books, and contributed chapters to more than 140 books. His research has received over 13,500 citations.
He has also served as Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, Director of SGPGIMS Lucknow, and Vice-Chancellor of SOA University, Bhubaneswar. In April 2025, he was conferred with the Padma Shri award by President Droupadi Murmu. As President of AIIMS Bhopal, his vast experience is expected to bring new energy and excellence to the institute’s medical services, education, and research.
