CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: On the eve of Bangladesh Vijay Diwas, the Bangladesh special edition of ‘Pahal,’ the experimental journal of the Department of Mass Communication at Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication, was launched at the Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar Auditorium on the university campus. The program featured addresses by former senior BBC journalist Salman Ravi, Salil Chatterjee, General Secretary of the Bengali Association Kalibari, and University Guru Vijay Manohar Tiwari.
On this occasion, Guru Tiwari emphasized diligence, experimental approach, and in-depth exploration of contemporary issues. He noted that in the context of Bangladesh, it becomes evident that when all other options are exhausted, terrorism spares no one, not even one’s own. He urged students to view journalism not merely as a source of information, but as a responsible form of social intervention.
Former BBC specialist correspondent Salman Ravi stated that today’s journalism faces its greatest challenge from a flood of reels, memes, and content lacking relevance or concern. He said that in such times, journalism students must develop research skills, deep understanding of issues, and the ability to present them in context to maintain both credibility and impact.

Salil Chatterjee, General Secretary of the Bengali Association Kalibari, highlighted the historical background of Bangladesh, explaining how the optimistic outlook at the time of independence gradually shifted toward extremism. He also expressed concern over injustices against the Bengali community in Bangladesh and their declining population. Praising this special edition of Pahal, he advised emerging journalists to balance courage to ask questions with sensitivity to express the suffering of victims in their writing.
Students involved in the publication process of Pahal shared their experiences during the program. Heads of various university departments, Registrar Dr. P. Shashikala, and faculty members were present. The program was conducted by Mahak Pawani and Mansi, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Shantanu Singh, coordinator of the Pahal editorial team.
