CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: CNN Central News & Network – ITDC India ePress / ITDC News, Bhopal. Amid a political and security crisis in Pakistan, an emergency has been imposed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. President Asif Ali Zardari approved the emergency and governor’s rule on October 11, 2026, on the recommendation of the federal cabinet. With the decision, the functioning of the provincial government led by jailed former prime minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has been suspended. The province will now be administered under the leadership of the governor.
The federal government of Pakistan has cited rising terrorist incidents and a deteriorating law-and-order situation in the province as the main reasons behind the decision. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government has alleged that the provincial administration was not extending adequate cooperation in action against terrorism. PTI, however, has rejected the allegations and described the federal government’s move as an attack on provincial autonomy and the democratic mandate.
After the emergency was imposed, the federal government also approved the deployment of the Pakistan Army to assist the civil administration. Security has been tightened in several areas, including Peshawar. Reports have also emerged of roadblocks being set up and internet services being disrupted in some areas. Meanwhile, PTI leaders have claimed that former chief minister Sohail Afridi and the party’s provincial president Junaid Akbar have been detained. However, officials have not issued a clear official confirmation of their detention status. According to media reports, there are also reports that both leaders have been placed under house arrest.
The decision comes amid protests by PTI supporters demanding Imran Khan’s release and a proposed march towards Islamabad. It is expected to further increase tensions between the federal government and the opposition party. The decision is likely to be challenged in courts and on political platforms in the coming days. The security situation and political developments in the province remain under close watch across the country.
