Despite winning the ODI tri-series title by defeating Sri Lanka, the Pakistan cricket team has faced action from the International Cricket Council (ICC). The team has been fined five percent of its match fee for maintaining a slow over rate. Captain Shaheen Shah Afridi accepted the mistake and agreed to the proposed sanction.

The matter relates to the final played between Pakistan and Sri Lanka at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on October 31. Match referee Jeff Crowe, after taking time allowances into account, found that Pakistan were one over short of the required rate within the stipulated time. Action was then taken under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct. Under this rule, players are fined five percent of their match fee for each over by which a side falls short of the prescribed over rate.

Shaheen Afridi accepted the charge, so there was no need for a formal hearing in the matter. The fine will apply to all players and the playing group.

Amid this action, however, Pakistan had recorded an impressive win in the final. Chasing Sri Lanka’s target of 326, Pakistan made 331 for seven and won the match by three wickets. Fakhar Zaman played a superb innings of 127 runs and played a key role in helping the team win the title.
