CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) has elected Pakistan as a member for a four-year term from 2026 to 2029. The election took place during a vote held by the United Nations Economic and Social Council. According to a report by Pakistan’s newspaper The News International, this information was confirmed in a statement issued by Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.
The statement expressed gratitude for the support received from member states of the Council. Pakistan’s election to the Commission reflects the international community’s trust and confidence in the country’s commitment to global drug control efforts. The Mission further stated that Pakistan has consistently been at the forefront of international efforts to combat drug trafficking, production, and abuse.
Pakistan’s Track Record Is Highly Concerning
It is important to note that a 2013 report released by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime contradicts Pakistan’s claims. According to the report, the total number of drug addicts in Pakistan was 7.6 million, with 78% being men and 22% women. The report raised concerns that the number of drug addicts in Pakistan is increasing at a rate of 40,000 per year. As a result, Pakistan has become one of the most drug-affected countries in the world. The use of heroin, cocaine, and hashish is rampant in the country.
Last year, Pakistan’s Anti-Narcotics Force made a shocking revelation. It stated that the key individual responsible for smuggling heroin into India was none other than Mazhar Iqbal, the head of Lahore Police’s Anti-Narcotics Wing. His network had been using drones to smuggle drugs—especially heroin—into India. Since 1994, he had been suspended 45 times for related offenses. The Anti-Narcotics Force of Pakistan expressed surprise that, despite his highly suspicious record, Iqbal was still appointed to lead Lahore Police’s anti-drug division.
