CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Amid rising global oil prices, a major warning has emerged over petrol prices in Pakistan. Pakistan Petroleum Minister Ali Pervez Malik has said petrol could reach 1,000 Pakistani rupees per litre if the country faces a fuel shortage. He made the statement while speaking to journalists in Lahore on September 20.
According to the minister, petrol prices in Pakistan have risen by nearly 50 per cent since March. Petrol is currently reported at around 389.14 Pakistani rupees per litre, while high-speed diesel is reported at around 424.04 rupees per litre. The government says there is currently no immediate fuel shortage in the country and efforts are continuing to maintain supplies.
The petroleum minister said a sharp rise in international oil prices and the continuing conflict in the Middle East have increased pressure on Pakistan’s energy system. The government has also launched a fuel relief scheme to support low-income people. Under the scheme, eligible two-wheelers, three-wheelers and cars up to 800 cc will receive assistance of 100 rupees per litre.
The government is also focusing on increasing domestic oil production while maintaining fuel supplies. The minister said work has begun on oil wells and domestic crude oil exploration is expected by October. However, the figure of 1,000 rupees per litre is not the current price, but a warning given by the minister in the event of a possible fuel crisis.
