CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Mansa. Tension continues in Punjab’s Mansa after the killing of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota. Six days after the incident, his family has not performed the last rites. The family and protesters remain firm on their demand that the case be investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Meanwhile, the government has formed a committee to examine the demands linked to the case and the family’s complaints. However, no agreement has yet been reached on the funeral.

Parvinder Singh Jhota was shot dead in Mansa on October 13. He had been running a campaign against drugs. During the incident, he was allegedly raising questions over the sale of banned intoxicating drugs at a medical store. Jhota died in the firing, while four other people were injured. The family says the funeral will not be held until a concrete decision is taken on handing the investigation to the CBI and on other demands. Relatives have demanded an impartial investigation and action against those responsible.

Talks are continuing between the state government and protesting organisations over the case. The committee formed by the government is meant to consider the demands and find a way to end the deadlock. However, no final agreement has yet emerged on fulfilling the demand of the family and the struggle committee for a CBI probe. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has already assured an impartial investigation into the case and action if any conspiracy is uncovered. The central government has also sought a report from the Punjab government on the incident.

Following Jhota’s killing, various organisations and political parties in Punjab have held protests. Protesters are demanding a crackdown on drug trafficking, an investigation into alleged collusion, and justice for the victim’s family. The case has intensified debate in the state over the drug trade and law and order. For now, an agreement between the government and the family is important to end the deadlock over the funeral. All eyes are on the next decisions in the investigation and on the demand for a CBI probe.
