Passport Rules Revised, Major Changes Announced in Fees as Well

CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The central government has made significant changes to passport-related rules and fees. After amendments by the Ministry of External Affairs, a new system has been introduced for some categories in the process of obtaining and reissuing passports. The new rules will particularly affect the validity of children’s passports and the fees for various passport services.

Under the new provisions, the validity of a 36-page regular passport issued to children below 15 years of age will now be five years or until the child completes 18 years of age. The passport’s validity will be determined on the basis of whichever period ends earlier. This change has been made effective from September 15, 2026.

Passport fees have also been revised. The fee for a 36-page regular passport or its reissue has been increased to Rs 2,500, while the fee for a 60-page passport has been fixed at Rs 3,500. Under the Tatkal service, the fee for a 36-page passport will be Rs 5,000 and for a 60-page passport Rs 6,000.

In addition, the fee for issuing a new passport in place of a lost, stolen or damaged passport has also been changed. According to the government, the revised fees and rules are aimed at aligning passport services with current service costs and administrative arrangements.
