CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. Outdoor air pollution is not the only factor responsible for cough and difficulty in breathing. Perfumes, room fresheners, cleaning chemicals and smoke from incense sticks used inside homes can also worsen respiratory problems in some people.
According to experts, fragrant chemicals released from these products and fine particles present in the air can cause irritation in the eyes, nose and throat. In people suffering from asthma or allergies, exposure to them may increase problems such as coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.
Perfumes and room fresheners may cause discomfort. Some chemicals present in perfumes, scented sprays and room fresheners can affect the respiratory system of sensitive people. Repeated use of these products in closed rooms can increase discomfort. Their impact is not the same on every person, but if persistent cough or difficulty in breathing occurs after using a product, it is advisable to stop using it.
Cleaning products and pesticides may also be a cause. Floor-cleaning chemicals, bathroom cleaners, pesticide sprays and other strong-smelling products can also affect indoor air quality. While cleaning, it is important to follow product instructions and maintain adequate ventilation. Mixing different cleaning chemicals can produce dangerous gases, so this should never be done.
Smoke from incense sticks and scented candles can also be harmful. Burning incense sticks, dhoop and scented candles can release fine particles and other pollutants into the air. Their smoke may worsen cough or breathing problems in asthma patients and sensitive people. It is better to limit their use indoors and prevent smoke from accumulating.
What should be done to keep indoor air clean?
Reduce the use of perfumes and room fresheners when they are not needed.
Choose unscented cleaning products where possible.
Ensure proper ventilation while cleaning and read product instructions.
Avoid smoking and unnecessary smoke-producing activities inside the home.
Control moisture and dampness, as mould can also worsen respiratory problems.
If a cough persists for a long time, wheezing occurs repeatedly or there is difficulty in breathing, consult a doctor. In case of severe breathing difficulty, it is important to seek medical help immediately.
