According to Cleveland Clinic, pinworms are small, white parasitic worms, and this infection is more common among children. Female pinworms lay eggs around the anus at night, which can cause severe itching, especially during the night.
Because of the itching, a child may repeatedly scratch the area. This can transfer eggs to the fingers and under the nails, from where they can spread to hands, clothes, bedding, toys and other surfaces. Later, when hands reach the mouth, the infection can occur again. For this reason, cleanliness at home and hand hygiene are extremely important.
Pinworm infection is treated with anti-parasite medicines, but it is necessary to consult a doctor before giving any medicine to a child. In some cases, other family members may also need treatment. Regular handwashing, keeping nails short, bathing daily, and thoroughly washing underwear and bedding can reduce the risk of the infection spreading and recurring.
