CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: If children repeatedly complain of itching around the anus, restlessness or poor sleep at night, one possible cause may be a pinworm infection. According to Cleveland Clinic, pinworms are small, white parasitic worms, and this infection is more common among children. Female pinworms lay eggs around the anus at night, which can cause intense itching, especially during the night.

Because of the itching, a child may scratch the area repeatedly. This can transfer the eggs to the fingers and nails, and then to hands, clothes, bedding, toys and other surfaces. Later, if the hands reach the mouth, the infection can occur again. For this reason, cleanliness at home and proper hand hygiene are extremely important.

Pinworm infection is treated with anti-parasitic medicines, but it is important to consult a doctor before giving any medicine to a child. In some cases, other family members may also need treatment. Regular handwashing, keeping nails short, bathing daily, and thoroughly washing underwear and bedding can reduce the risk of the infection spreading and recurring.
