CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: In a thought-provoking statement at the Startup Mahakumbh event, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal sparked a debate by criticizing the business model of certain Indian startups, comparing them to Chinese clones merely focused on “dukaan-dari” (shopkeeping) rather than innovation and long-term value creation.

Goyal’s remarks — particularly aimed at hyperlocal delivery apps that prioritize speed over substance — were interpreted by many as a veiled critique of companies like Zepto, the 10-minute grocery delivery giant. He urged Indian entrepreneurs to pursue research-driven, tech-first business models rather than mimicking foreign formats.

However, Zepto Co-founder Aadit Palicha was quick to respond. Without directly naming the Minister, he defended his startup’s model, stating that “criticizing is easy” but building a company that provides over 1.5 lakh jobs and ensures smooth deliveries to millions of households is no small feat. He emphasized the value of execution, logistics innovation, and economic empowerment that Zepto has brought to the table.

This clash represents a deeper ideological rift in India’s startup ecosystem — between policymakers’ vision for self-reliant, IP-driven startups and the operational hustle of young entrepreneurs meeting market demand in real time.

Goyal’s push for value-added innovation aligns with the government’s broader vision under initiatives like Startup India and Make in India. The concern is valid: Indian startups must rise beyond valuation games and instead contribute to national capabilities — through deep tech, AI, green energy, and scientific R&D.

But on the other hand, Palicha’s defense cannot be dismissed either. Startups like Zepto have not only created jobs but also shaped new consumer habits, transformed supply chains, and brought efficiency to urban logistics — all without massive government subsidies or policy crutches.

The startup ecosystem must perhaps find balance: celebrate the scale and spirit of execution, while also nurturing the courage to build India-born technologies that can scale globally.

India doesn’t need to choose between being a nation of fast deliveries or a hub of innovation. It needs to be both.
