CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Varanasi: Amid the rising water level of the Ganga river and flood-like conditions in the lower-lying areas of the city, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the situation in his parliamentary constituency, Varanasi. The Prime Minister spoke by phone with the District Magistrate and the Mayor of Varanasi and sought information about relief and rescue operations.
According to reports, officials in Varanasi suddenly received a call from the Prime Minister’s Office. They were told on the phone, “PM sir will speak.” After this, Prime Minister Modi spoke directly with the officials and took information about the flood situation in the city.
PM Modi asked about the affected areas, relief and rescue work, and the administration’s preparedness. He directed officials to ensure that flood-affected people do not face any difficulty and that essential facilities reach those in need on time.
The water level of the Ganga is continuously rising in Varanasi. According to Central Water Commission data, the Ganga’s water level reached 70.54 metres on Thursday morning, which is above the designated warning level of 70.262 metres. At the Rajghat gauge, the water was reported to be rising at a rate of about 2 centimetres per hour.
Along with the Ganga, waterlogging conditions also persist in the low-lying areas around the Varuna river. The administration has increased monitoring in the affected areas and disaster management teams have been kept on alert.
The Prime Minister told officials that food, drinking water, medical facilities and other essential relief material should reach affected people on time. The administration has been instructed to prioritise people’s safety and maintain continuous monitoring of the situation.
Against the backdrop of the steadily rising water level in Varanasi, the Prime Minister’s direct conversation with officials is being considered significant at the administrative level. At present, the administration’s priority is to ensure the safety of people living in low-lying areas and to keep relief and rescue arrangements strengthened.
