CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was given an unprecedented official welcome today at the historic Freedom Square in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. This is possibly the first time a foreign leader has been honored in such a manner at this location in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake extended a grand welcome to Prime Minister Modi at Freedom Square.
This information was reported in a news article by the Sinhala-language Sri Lankan newspaper Divaina. Prime Minister Modi arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday for a three-day visit (April 4 to 6). The purpose of his visit is to strengthen economic and strategic ties with India’s southern neighbor. Tomorrow, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to offer prayers at the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation including Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Following the welcome ceremony, Prime Minister Modi proceeded to the Presidential Secretariat for a bilateral meeting with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will virtually inaugurate a project to install solar panels on the rooftops of 5,000 religious sites in Sri Lanka. Additionally, he will visit the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree in Anuradhapura. He will also officially inaugurate the Mahawa-Anuradhapura railway signaling system and the upgraded Mahawa-Omantha railway line, both established with Indian grants. His visit will conclude on the afternoon of April 6.
