CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: US Ambassador Sergio Gor has made a significant statement on India-US relations. He said that if President Donald Trump were asked which of the nearly 35 leaders attending the G20 he would like to meet first, Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be at the top of his priority list. Gor cited the personal relationship and friendship between Trump and Modi as a key reason.
Speaking to India Today TV, Sergio Gor said Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming visit to the United States may not remain limited to the multilateral G20 meeting. According to him, Trump considers Prime Minister Modi a friend, and the personal rapport between the two leaders is also important. However, no official announcement has yet been made about a separate bilateral meeting between the two leaders.
The US ambassador also indicated that Donald Trump could visit India next year. Referring to positive memories of Trump’s 2020 visit to India, he said the US President values relations with India.
Gor also gave positive signals on the India-US trade agreement. He said some changes are being made in the talks after the US Supreme Court’s decision, but the two countries are very close to an agreement. He expressed hope that the deal could be finalised in the next few months.
Gor also described India as a trusted defence partner of the United States. He said military cooperation between the two countries is not limited to the purchase and sale of weapons, but is based on mutual trust and strategic partnership. He also emphasised the role of the Quad and the expanding scope of India-US cooperation.
Despite differences over trade in India-US relations, both sides are focusing on advancing defence, technology, investment and strategic cooperation. Gor had recently described ties between the two countries as being at a historic high and also stressed the need for fair and reciprocal trade.
