M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) was not only a superstar in Tamil cinema but also served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Today marks the 108th birth anniversary of MGR. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to MGR on Friday, acknowledging his significant contributions to the development of Tamil Nadu.
Prime Minister Modi shared a video on his social media handle, X (formerly Twitter), and wrote, “I pay my tributes to Shri MGR on his birth anniversary. We are deeply inspired by his efforts to empower the poor and create a better society.”
Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai also paid homage to the former Chief Minister MGR. He said, “Today marks the birth anniversary of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Bharat Ratna recipient MGR. He initiated numerous schemes for the welfare of the underprivileged and marginalized sections of society, including healthcare, training programs, employment schemes, education, women’s empowerment, and nutritious meals for school children. He organized the World Tamil Conference, bringing pride to Tamils worldwide. We pay tribute to Dr. MGR, a great nationalist who worked tirelessly for the upliftment of the backward communities.”
Who Was MGR?
M.G. Ramachandran was a legendary superstar of the Tamil film industry. His massive fan following left the world in awe. He made his acting debut at the age of 19 in the 1936 film Sati Leelavati, where he played the role of a police inspector. His first lead role came in the 1947 film Rajakumari. By the 1950s, after delivering multiple hits like Manthiri Kumari, MGR rose to stardom. The 1954 blockbuster Malaikkallan was such a massive success that he was worshipped as a deity thereafter.
MGR Entered Politics in 1953
MGR joined the Congress Party in 1953. His popularity was so immense that every political party wanted him in their fold. Renowned film writer-turned-politician C.N. Annadurai convinced MGR to join his party, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). In 1962, MGR became a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the first time.
