CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi: An unusual situation was witnessed in Delhi on Monday when police personnel gathered outside the Police Headquarters to protest the transfer of officers from their own department. The responsibility of stopping the protesting personnel and maintaining order was also assigned to other Delhi Police personnel. During the developments, security was increased around the Police Headquarters and senior officers monitored the situation.
The protest is linked to a dispute between lawyers and police officers at Shahdara police station. In the clash on October 23, advocate Lalit Bansal suffered a head injury. After this, lawyers accused the police of not taking proper action and alleged that an officer had threatened them during a meeting by showing a revolver. In protest, lawyers of Delhi’s district courts began a strike.
Amid the lawyers’ protest, ACP Manasvi Vashishth and the then SHO of Shahdara police station, Inspector Arun Kumar, were transferred on October 28. After this, the lawyers ended their strike. However, these transfers led to resentment among some personnel in the police department.
On Monday, police personnel reached the headquarters and expressed dissatisfaction with the decision of the authorities. They said action taken under pressure from lawyers could affect the morale of police officers and staff. The personnel who joined the protest were seeking talks with senior officers and intervention in the matter.
During this time, a police force remained deployed to prevent the personnel from moving towards the headquarters premises. Some personnel of the same department were protesting, while others were engaged in maintaining security and law and order.
The incident has sparked fresh discussion within the police department over internal coordination, the process of officers’ transfers and police-lawyer relations.
