CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi: Police personnel gathered outside the police headquarters on Monday to express their anger over the transfer of two senior Delhi Police officers. The matter is linked to a dispute between lawyers and police officers at Shahdara police station in East Delhi.

The protesting personnel said the officers were transferred after protests and pressure from lawyers, which could affect the morale of the police force.

The dispute began with an incident at Shahdara police station on October 23. It is alleged that advocate Lalit Bansal suffered a serious head injury during a clash. After this, lawyers accused the police of not taking proper action in the matter and alleged that an officer threatened them by showing a revolver during a meeting. In protest over these incidents, lawyers of Delhi’s district courts began an indefinite strike.

Amid the lawyers’ demands, ACP Mansvi Vashishth and the then SHO of Shahdara police station, Inspector Arun Kumar, were transferred on October 28. ACP Vashishth was sent to the Special Police Unit for Women and Children (SPUWAC), while Inspector Arun Kumar was moved to the security unit. The lawyers then ended their strike.

Angered by the transfers, police personnel reached the police headquarters on the morning of November 2 and demanded talks with senior officers and their intervention. Earlier, appeals to gather had also circulated in WhatsApp groups of police personnel. ACP Vashishth also expressed gratitude for the support of his colleagues and suggested an open dialogue with the Commissioner of Police.

Meanwhile, police and lawyers’ organisations have agreed to set up a joint coordination committee and appoint nodal officers at the district level to prevent disputes in the future. It remains to be seen what steps senior officers take on the demands of police personnel and for better coordination between the two sides.
