CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Lucknow. Preparations are under way for large-scale transfers in the police department before the 2027 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. According to reports, the postings of around 2,000 police personnel in the state are being reviewed. There is also discussion that more than 20 IPS officers could come under the scope of the possible reshuffle. However, there has so far been no confirmation of a final list or official order for transfers on such a large scale.
According to reports citing sources, the Director General of Police (DGP) headquarters has sought details from districts and police commissionerates about police personnel who have been posted in the same district for a long time. The proposed review may include the postings of constables, head constables, sub-inspectors, inspectors and senior officers. Transfers are being considered for personnel who have been posted in the same district for three years or more. Postings of police personnel in their home districts may also come under review.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India has issued guidelines on the transfer of officers connected with election work in five states, including Uttar Pradesh, as part of preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections. Under the instructions, relevant officials who have been posted in the same district for three years or more up to the prescribed period, and those posted in their home districts, are to be transferred. For Uttar Pradesh, the cut-off date for calculating tenure has been fixed as May 31, 2027. The Election Commission’s directions apply in the police department to posts connected with the election process, from sub-inspectors to senior range officers and police commissioners. The commission has asked the state chief secretary and the Director General of Police to submit a compliance report by November 30.
Reports of movement within the police department have also emerged after a clash between BJP workers and police in Varanasi during the counting of votes for the MLC election. Reports are linking the proposed reshuffle to administrative review and election preparations. However, it is not clear how many officers in the possible transfers will be affected because of this incident or for other administrative reasons. For now, the process of gathering details related to police postings and complying with the Election Commission’s guidelines is significant. Only after the final transfer list is issued will it become clear how many personnel and officers will see changes in their responsibilities.
