CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Lucknow. Political discussions have intensified in Uttar Pradesh over a possible alliance between Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) chief and Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Media reports have claimed that talks between the two parties have moved forward and that seat-sharing is being discussed. However, no official confirmation has yet emerged on a formal announcement of the alliance or a final agreement on seats.

Focus on Dalit-Muslim equation: Dalit and Muslim voters have played an important role in Uttar Pradesh politics. Various estimates put the Dalit population at around 21 percent and the Muslim population at about 19 percent. The combined population of the two communities is estimated at nearly 40 percent, but this cannot be treated as a guaranteed vote base for any alliance.

Chandrashekhar Azad has been trying to expand his political base among the Dalit community, especially among the youth. Owaisi’s party, meanwhile, has continued to emphasise Muslim political representation and expansion of its organisation. If the two parties come together, they may try to increase their presence through common candidates in western Uttar Pradesh, Rohilkhand and some other regions.

Talks may take place on seat-sharing: Media reports have claimed that AIMIM wants to contest some Muslim-dominated seats in Uttar Pradesh. The reports have also discussed its claim on 40 to 45 seats. However, this cannot be considered a final seat-sharing arrangement. No official list is available on the seats where the two parties have reached an understanding.

AIMIM’s Uttar Pradesh president Shaukat Ali had earlier said in response to questions related to an alliance that the final decision would be taken by party chief Asaduddin Owaisi. He had also not confirmed receiving a formal invitation. In such a situation, official statements from both parties will be important for clarity on the status of the alliance.

What impact on Mayawati and Akhilesh’s politics? Chandrashekhar Azad’s expansion in Dalit politics is a subject of discussion in the context of the traditional role of the Bahujan Samaj Party. On the other hand, Owaisi’s activity may trigger political debate over its possible impact on the Samajwadi Party’s Muslim support base. However, voters’ preferences will also depend on local candidates, regional issues, party organisation and electoral circumstances.

If both parties announce an alliance, the selection of seats, popularity of candidates and the strategy for joint campaigning will be important in determining their political role. For now, amid talk of a possible new front ahead of the 2027 elections, all eyes are on a formal announcement and seat-sharing.
