CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Air pollution is often linked to symptoms such as cough, sore throat and breathing difficulty. However, according to experts, polluted air can also affect people who do not feel any clear discomfort at first. Amid concerns over air quality in Delhi and several other areas, doctors have advised even asymptomatic people to take precautions.
How do pollution particles reach the lungs? According to Dr. Vikas Mittal, director of the Department of Pulmonology at C.K. Birla Hospital, extremely fine particles such as PM2.5 present in the air can travel deep into the lungs while breathing and cause inflammation. In many cases, the effect is not visible immediately. Therefore, it is not correct to judge lung health only on the basis of whether a person has a cough or breathing difficulty.
Risk may increase with long-term exposure. Continuous breathing in polluted air can affect lung function. It may worsen problems for people suffering from diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Children, the elderly and people who already have heart or lung disease should take special precautions. However, pollution does not affect every person in the same way. It also depends on the duration of exposure, pollution levels and the person’s health condition.
What should be done to avoid pollution? Keep regular track of the Air Quality Index (AQI). When pollution is high, avoid strenuous outdoor exercise and limit outdoor activities.
If needed, use a well-fitted N95 mask outside. Reduce cigarette smoke, incense sticks and other smoke-producing sources indoors. Consider using an air purifier with a HEPA filter of suitable size for the home.
When should a doctor be consulted? Seek medical advice if there is persistent cough, breathlessness, wheezing, chest tightness or unusual fatigue during normal activities. Immediate medical assistance is necessary in case of severe breathing difficulty or sharp chest pain. Not every healthy asymptomatic person needs regular lung check-ups; doctors decide on testing based on risk and health condition.
