CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Pope Leo XIV, the head of the Catholic Church, has been diagnosed with lung cancer. He underwent surgery on October 13, 2026, at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, during which the lower part of his right lung was removed.

According to medical information released by the Vatican, examination of tissue after the surgery confirmed lung adenocarcinoma. It is a common type of lung cancer.

The surgery was performed to remove a nodule. The 71-year-old Pope Leo had said on Sunday that a nodule had been detected in his lung during a routine medical examination. Doctors advised surgery to remove it. He was then admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome.

According to the Vatican, the operation lasted about 90 minutes and was completed without any complications. After the surgery, the Pope regained consciousness normally and was shifted to a hospital room. Doctors have continued to monitor his health.

His public programmes have been postponed. After the surgery, the Pope may need to remain in hospital for about a week. His public events until October 20 have been cancelled. A decision on his proposed visit to South America in November will also be taken on the basis of his health and recovery.

For now, detailed information on the stage of the cancer and further treatment is still awaited. Based on additional medical tests, doctors will decide whether any other treatment will be required after the surgery.
