During the operation, the lower part of his right lung was removed. Doctors said the operation was successful and no complications occurred during the procedure.
According to the Vatican’s medical bulletin, a small lump in the Pope’s lung was detected during a routine health check-up. Initial tests had raised suspicion of cancer, which was confirmed through examination of tissue removed during surgery. Doctors have identified the disease as lung adenocarcinoma, a common type of lung cancer.
Doctors said the operation lasted about 90 minutes. In the procedure, the lower part of the right lung was removed using video-assisted surgical technology. After the operation, the Pope regained consciousness and, following monitoring, was shifted to a hospital room. According to information released on October 14, the Pope spent a peaceful night and showed signs of improvement. Doctors said he was able to walk, eat and begin respiratory exercises. The plan is to keep him in hospital for about a week.
The Vatican has not released detailed information on the stage of the cancer, whether it has spread, or further treatment. Doctors are awaiting additional test results from the removed tissue. The need and nature of further treatment will be decided on the basis of these results. There is concern across the Catholic community worldwide over Pope Leo’s health. Leaders from several countries have wished him a speedy recovery. For now, according to information provided by the Vatican, the surgery was successful and doctors continue to monitor his health condition.
