CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Portugal Beats Denmark 5–2 in Extra Time, Secures Nations League Semifinal Spot Against Germany
Francisco Trincão emerged as the hero for Portugal, scoring two goals off the bench, while Cristiano Ronaldo also delivered a strong performance to help Portugal defeat Denmark 5–2 in extra time on Sunday. With this win, Portugal claimed a 5–3 aggregate victory and advanced to the UEFA Nations League semifinals, where they will face Germany.
Victory Led by Ronaldo’s Commanding Presence
Though Ronaldo missed an early penalty, he played a crucial role in Portugal’s comeback. Despite being substituted in extra time, he remained actively engaged, encouraging his team and the fans. Ultimately, Portugal succeeded in breaking through Denmark’s strong defensive line.
In the first leg, Denmark had won 1–0 in Copenhagen thanks to a goal by Rasmus Højlund. However, Denmark faced a blow when key defender Joakim Mæhle left the squad to attend the birth of his child. His replacement, Patrick Dorgu, gave away an early penalty in the third minute after fouling Ronaldo in the box.
Early Struggles and Portugal’s Resurgence
Ronaldo stepped up to take the penalty, but Kasper Schmeichel made a brilliant save. In the 17th minute, Ronaldo had another chance with a header from a Nuno Mendes cross, but Schmeichel again denied him.
Portugal finally took the lead in the 38th minute when Danish defender Joachim Andersen accidentally scored an own goal. But in the 56th minute, Rasmus Kristensen equalized for Denmark with a powerful header from a corner kick.
Trincão Changes the Game
Ronaldo put Portugal ahead again in the 67th minute with a stunning angled strike. However, Christian Eriksen equalized once more in the 76th minute, giving Denmark the aggregate lead.
Then came the turning point—Francisco Trincão scored in the 86th minute, making it 3–3 on aggregate, pushing the match into extra time. Just minutes later in the 91st, Trincão chipped a beautiful goal to put Portugal ahead.
Denmark fought hard until the end, but Trincão’s second goal drained their momentum. Substitute Gonçalo Ramos sealed the match with another goal, giving Portugal a resounding 5–2 win in this leg.
Now, Portugal will face Germany in what promises to be an electrifying UEFA Nations League semifinal, after Germany edged out Italy 5–4.
