CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Strong earthquake tremors were felt in Indonesia on Friday. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake that struck the north-eastern region of Java measured 6.6 in magnitude, with its epicentre at a depth of about 376 kilometres below the ground. Because it occurred at such a great depth, it is being considered a deep-focus earthquake.
Indonesia’s earthquake monitoring agency BMKG also confirmed the earthquake. According to initial information, there were no immediate reports of major damage or loss of life. The agency also said there was no tsunami threat from the earthquake, although people have been advised to remain alert for possible aftershocks.
Indonesia is located in the active seismic zone of the Pacific region, and seismic activity is recorded there frequently. In the past too, major earthquakes in different parts of the country have caused damage and loss of life.
For now, local and international earthquake monitoring agencies are keeping watch on the situation. The administration has appealed to people not to panic, to follow official guidelines, and to exercise caution in the event of any fresh tremors.
