CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Actor Prakash Raj has expressed support for the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commission’s handling of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The protest is scheduled at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park on October 2.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke has announced a “Jail Bharo Andolan” at Shivaji Park and called on people to join the demonstration. The organisation is demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar and changes related to the SIR process.
Prakash Raj’s reported support adds a prominent film-industry voice to the ongoing campaign. The actor has previously participated in or expressed support for protests associated with the CJP movement.
Mumbai Police, however, has not granted permission for the proposed gathering at Shivaji Park. Police have cited restrictions arising from Bombay High Court orders and Maharashtra government guidelines, along with concerns relating to the ground’s silence-zone status, traffic movement and emergency access. Organisers were advised to identify an alternative venue.
Despite the lack of permission, CJP has said it plans to proceed with the protest. Dipke has announced that the organisation’s campaign would also extend to other cities, including Goa, Bengaluru and Kolkata.
The protests come amid a broader political debate over electoral-roll revision and the SIR exercise. The Election Commission has said that differences expressed during internal deliberations are part of its institutional process and has maintained that decisions relating to electoral-roll revision were taken by the full Commission.
