CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor has raised questions over the appointment of former Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar amid the ongoing controversy involving Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He said that the system would not change merely with Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, and that it was necessary to ensure transparency and accountability in the functioning of the Election Commission.

According to Prashant Kishor, before Gyanesh Kumar, Rajiv Kumar was the Chief Election Commissioner, and questions had also been raised over the functioning of the Commission during his tenure. He referred to the fact that after Rajiv Kumar’s retirement, he was appointed chairman of HDFC Bank. Raising questions in the context of this appointment, Kishor said there was a need to discuss the impartiality of the Election Commission and institutional accountability.

Rajiv Kumar had left the post of Chief Election Commissioner in February 2025. He was subsequently appointed as the non-executive chairman of HDFC Bank. The appointment took place after his retirement from government service.

Prashant Kishor demanded greater transparency in processes related to the voter list, election schedule, model code of conduct and counting of votes. He also suggested increasing the role of the Supreme Court in the process of appointing election commissioners.

However, the questions raised over the appointment are not in themselves proof of any wrongdoing. Any conclusion on the issue should be based only on the relevant facts and rules.
