An eight-page suicide note that has emerged in the case of the death of 18-year-old NEET student Ritu Sharma in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has raised serious questions about mental health. In the note, the student wrote that for nearly the past two years she had been troubled by unwanted thoughts and a compulsion to repeat the same task again and again. While studying, even after reading the same chapter several times, she felt she had not understood it properly. If she did not read it again, she remained gripped by the fear that something wrong might happen or that she might fail the examination.
According to the report, Ritu mentioned in her note a problem resembling obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). She wrote that disturbing thoughts kept coming to her mind continuously and she was unable to study in a normal way. Initially, she considered these experiences to be ordinary anxiety, but later, after reading about the symptoms of OCD on the internet, she felt her experiences were similar to them.
According to family members, Ritu was preparing for NEET. After not getting a seat in the first two rounds of counselling, she was allotted an MBBS seat in the third round at the government medical college in Sonbhadra. Police are investigating the matter.
According to doctors, OCD is treatable. It is not correct to understand OCD merely as a habit or a tendency to think repeatedly. It is a mental health condition in which a person may repeatedly experience unwanted thoughts and may feel compelled to repeat certain actions or check things again and again to reduce the anxiety caused by them. According to experts, it can be treated through psychiatric counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy and medication as needed. Timely identification and treatment help control symptoms.
People struggling with mental distress should seek help from family, a trusted person or a mental health expert instead of fighting alone. Suicide is not a solution to any problem, and timely support can save lives.
