New Delhi. The health of the mother and the foetus during pregnancy is linked to a child’s early brain development. Recent research has found an association between some pregnancy- and childbirth-related conditions and autism in children. However, researchers say such associations should not be viewed as direct causes.
In a large study conducted in Sweden, health records of 3.7 million people were analysed. Researchers found that children exposed in the womb to certain rare infections were about three times more likely to be diagnosed with autism later than children without such infections. These infections include cytomegalovirus, rubella, toxoplasma and herpes.
Other studies have also linked higher maternal weight during pregnancy, smoking, some mental health conditions, premature birth and certain childbirth-related complications with autism. However, in many cases, genetic and family factors may influence these associations.
According to experts, regular medical check-ups during pregnancy, protection from infections, a balanced diet and following a doctor’s advice are important. It is not correct to consider any one habit or illness as a definite cause of autism. Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental condition in which both genetic and environmental factors may play a role.
