CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: At the 72nd National Film Awards ceremony, President Droupadi Murmu appealed to film stars not to promote products that are harmful to health. Speaking at the ceremony held in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, she said popular artistes have considerable influence on children and young people, and should therefore use their influence responsibly. The President said that when successful artistes speak about the benefits of a healthy and disciplined lifestyle, a large number of young people are inspired by them. Keeping this influence in view, she urged popular artistes to avoid advertising and promoting products that could be harmful to people’s health.
In her address, Murmu also spoke on other issues linked to the social responsibility of the film industry. She appealed for increasing women’s participation on the National Film Awards jury and for ensuring respect and social security for small artistes, assistants and other workers in the film industry. Her remarks came at a time when celebrity advertisements, especially surrogate advertisements and the promotion of health-related products, have remained a subject of discussion. The central government’s existing advertising rules also contain provisions on misleading advertisements and improper endorsements.
