CNN Central News and Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies, Bhopal: Amid preparations for Census 2027 in the country, the central government has made a major change in the rules related to the appointment of employees for Census work. Along with teachers of government schools, teachers of private schools and colleges can now also be deployed on Census duty. For this, the Centre has amended the Census Rules, 1990. Under the new provision, states and Union Territories have been given the authority to appoint teachers of aided and unaided private educational institutions as enumerators, or Census personnel.

According to a notification issued by the Home Ministry, the services of teachers associated with government and private educational institutions, local bodies, societies and trusts can now be used for Census work. In addition, clerks and other officers of central and state government departments, public sector undertakings, banks, statutory bodies and companies can also be deployed for this work. State governments and Union Territory administrations will also be able to appoint other suitable persons according to their requirements.

Dependence on government teachers will reduce. Until now, the services of government school teachers have mainly been used in major national campaigns such as the Census. Complaints have been raised that their regular teaching activities are affected when Census work is added to election duty and other administrative responsibilities. Including private teachers in this process will expand the pool of available staff and allow the responsibility to be shared among more people.

Training and honorarium will also be provided. Private teachers and other employees appointed for Census work will be given the necessary training. They will also receive the prescribed honorarium. Census 2027 will be the country’s first digital Census, in which data will be collected through a mobile app. About 30 lakh field employees are planned to be deployed in this extensive campaign. The government’s objective is to make the Census process organised, faster and more effective.
