CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Supreme Court, making an important observation on the functioning of private universities, has said they cannot be run as profit-making institutions. The court made it clear that the primary objective of private universities should be to serve the wider public interest in education. The order was issued by a bench of Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Justice N.V. Anjaria.
The Supreme Court has directed states and Union Territories to obtain audit reports from private universities within six weeks. The reports will have to include financial details such as the amount collected by the universities, its use, fees charged from students, and salaries of teachers and staff. The universities will also have to provide information on payments made to persons associated with the management.
The court has also sought information related to the admission process in universities, appointment of teachers, quality of education and teaching hours. It has further asked for details of benefits received by the universities in the form of government land, concessions or other facilities. The Supreme Court’s position comes in the context of concerns over commercialisation of education and profiteering. However, the court also clarified that universities may have arrangements to raise necessary financial resources for the development of education and improvement of the institution, but the objective should not be private profit.
