CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal : Prof. A.K. Mahapatra visited AIIMS Bhopal, where he was welcomed by Prof. Madhavanand Kar, Executive Director & CEO, and Sandesh Kumar Jain, Deputy Director (Administration). During his visit, he held meetings with department heads and other officials to discuss institutional challenges and potential solutions. His tour included an inspection of the hospital, covering the Outpatient Department (OPD) as well as inpatient wards and services. He reviewed patient care and facilities and interacted with student union representatives, nursing superintendents, and nursing staff.

Prof. Mahapatra also toured the AIIMS Bhopal campus and inaugurated the newly developed futsal arena, where he discussed campus-related issues. Additionally, a meeting with all faculty members was conducted to deliberate on academic and institutional matters and to explore ways to further improve operational standards.

At AIIMS New Delhi, he has held several significant positions, including Head of the Neurosurgery Department, Head of the Neurosciences Centre, and Dean (Research). In 2017, he led a remarkable 26-hour successful operation separating conjoined twin children, ‘Jaga’ and ‘Kalia,’ a milestone in Indian medical history. Globally, only 12 such surgeries have been performed in the past 40 years.

Prof. Mahapatra has over 870 research publications, 16 books, and 140 book chapters to his credit. He has also served in key leadership roles as Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, Director of SGPGI Lucknow, and Vice-Chancellor of SOA University Bhubaneswar. He was honored with the Padma Shri in 2025 and the C.V. Raman Award in 2022.
