CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: On the ninth day of the National Sanskrit Rupak Direction Workshop organised by the Natyashastra Study and Research Centre of the Central Sanskrit University, Bhopal campus, the first session featured a lecture by noted scholar Prof. Raghavendra Bhatt, who had arrived from Sringeri, Karnataka. He spoke on the plot structure of Sanskrit plays and the dialogues of the play Nagananda.

In his lecture, Prof. Bhatt said the plot of Sanskrit plays is a powerful expression of Indian culture, moral values and human sensitivities. Analysing the storyline of Nagananda, he said the play establishes the ideals of compassion, sacrifice, non-violence and public welfare. He said a play is like a yajna, in which the playwright, actors and audience all participate. Just as the purpose of a yajna is public welfare and global well-being, the purpose of theatre is also to establish harmony, values and human ideals in society.

Referring in particular to the dialogues of Nagananda, he said they carry the message of world peace, compassion, non-violence and human welfare. The emotions embedded in these dialogues not only take the story forward, but also offer a message of peace, coexistence and mutual respect to all humanity. He said it is necessary for directors and actors to internalise the emotions, meaning and philosophical depth of the dialogues and present them effectively on stage.

At the end of the lecture, Prof. Raghavendra Bhatt responded to participants’ queries and gave detailed guidance on various aspects of pronunciation, emotional expression and stage presentation of the dialogues of Nagananda. The information was given by coordinator Prof. Kripashankar Sharma.

The programme was successfully conducted by Kalyani, while Devendra Pathak proposed the vote of thanks.
