In a landmark moment for Indian conservation architecture, Professor Ajay Khare, from the School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal, has been selected as a Conservation Guest Scholar at the prestigious Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), USA for the Spring Term of the 2025–2026 academic year.
This selection marks a historic milestone—Professor Khare becomes the first-ever Indian Conservation Architect to receive this international fellowship from Getty, one of the world’s most respected institutions in cultural heritage and conservation studies.
As per the official letter from Getty, the grant includes residence in Los Angeles for the full term, allowing Professor Khare to dedicate himself to full-time research at the Getty Center. The offer also includes a stipend and housing under the Getty Scholar Housing Program. Scholars are expected to engage in orientation and participate in academic events throughout the term.
The confirmation, signed by Joan Weinstein, commends Professor Khare on his selection and extends a warm welcome to the Getty academic community. The selection also reflects his decades-long contribution to the field of conservation and architecture education in India.
Professor Khare shared his feelings with a poetic note:
> “I will not give up, nor will I pick a fight,
I write and erase on the canvas of time,
Singing a new song each time.”
He added that this recognition, arriving at the age of 60, feels like a new beginning. Accompanied by his wife Rachna, the fellowship also brings back memories of their time in York, UK, back in 1994.
This moment stands as a proud achievement for the Indian academic and architectural community, highlighting the global impact of India’s contribution to heritage preservation.
