CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: How Patients Can Protect Themselves From Inflated Hospital Treatment Bills

During illness, the priority for patients and families is treatment, but many people become worried about hospital expenses in this situation. Bills can increase in the name of tests, medicines, rooms, doctors’ fees and other procedures. Therefore, before admission to a hospital, it is important to seek information about the estimated cost of treatment and the necessary procedures.

Patients or their relatives can ask the hospital for details of the estimated treatment cost, room rent, doctors’ fees, and possible expenses for tests and medicines in written or digital form. If any additional test or procedure is said to be necessary, it is also appropriate to ask about the reason for it and the estimated charges.

While buying medicines, information can be sought about generic alternatives and prices along with the doctor’s prescription. Bills issued by the hospital, test reports and medicine receipts should be kept safely. If the patient has health insurance, it is useful to confirm the hospital’s network status and coverage with the insurance company or TPA before admission.

If the bill includes any service about which there is doubt, the patient can first seek clarification from the hospital’s billing or grievance department. If needed, a complaint can be filed through the relevant health authority, insurance grievance mechanism or the National Consumer Helpline.

The most important point is that treatment should not be delayed in a serious condition, but where possible, the expenses and treatment details should be understood beforehand. Keeping information about every treatment procedure, expense and document can help protect patients’ rights.
