CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Islamabad. Supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Sunday began a long march in Pakistan demanding the release of former prime minister Imran Khan. Thousands of supporters set out from Lakki Marwat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa towards Islamabad in a convoy of vehicles. According to reports, more than 5,000 people have joined the march.

PTI supporters are demanding the release of Imran Khan, who is in jail. The march is being led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. Talks had taken place between the government and PTI on postponing the march, but the two sides could not reach an agreement. PTI then decided to proceed with the protest.

The protesters’ convoy is planned to be taken towards Islamabad in several phases. According to PTI’s programme, the convoy will move ahead from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa while adding supporters from various areas. The next phase of the march is expected to be announced after it reaches Khairabad on October 8.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan government has increased security on entry routes to the capital to stop the march. Containers have been placed on major roads and highways. Officials have said protesters will not be allowed to occupy roads and important locations in Islamabad. Earlier too, the government had blocked key routes leading to the capital.

Imran Khan has been in jail since August 2023. He has been convicted in several cases, including corruption, while his party has continued to describe the cases as politically motivated. The current march is expected to further increase political tension between the government and the opposition in Pakistan.
