Incidents of stubble burning are continuing to rise in Punjab. A total of 2,347 cases of stubble burning had been reported in the state by November 4, 2026. According to a report by the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), the administration has imposed environmental fines of Rs 40.37 lakh in these cases, of which Rs 23.05 lakh has been recovered. In addition, 647 FIRs have been registered in stubble burning cases.
District-wise figures show Tarn Taran at the top. The district has recorded 558 incidents of stubble burning. It is followed by Ferozepur with 316 cases, Amritsar with 207, Bathinda with 167 and Sangrur with 163. The figures indicate that the problem of setting fields on fire persists in several districts of the state.
According to the report, the administration has so far inspected 1,942 fields, with fire confirmed at 868 locations. Environmental compensation has been imposed in a total of 801 cases. In addition, red entries have been made in revenue records in 723 cases, and 689 warning notices have been issued to the people concerned.
As per PPCB data, harvesting has been completed on 85.10 percent of Punjab’s total 32.87 lakh hectares of agricultural land under paddy. Despite this, incidents of stubble burning are continuing. The administration is trying to curb the practice through fines, FIRs and inspections, but fully checking field fires remains a major challenge.
