CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: In the initial results of Russia’s three-day parliamentary election, the ruling United Russia party, backed by President Vladimir Putin, has maintained a lead. Initial official figures show the party has received around 57.5% of the vote. The final results have not yet been declared, and the picture will become clear after the counting is completed.
The election was held for Russia’s 450-member State Duma. Of these, 225 seats are elected through party lists and 225 from single-member constituencies. In the early figures, United Russia candidates are also leading in a large number of single-member seats.
This is the first parliamentary election since Russia launched its large-scale military campaign in Ukraine in 2022. Putin had presented the election as linked to support for the country’s political direction and military policies. However, criticism has also emerged over opposition parties’ participation and political competition during the electoral process.
According to Russia’s Central Election Commission, parties such as the Communist Party, the LDPR and the New People party are trailing United Russia in the initial stage. The position of all parties in the State Duma will become clear after the final results are announced.
