CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Questions after toddler’s death in Mumbai: why do children turn violent?

CNN Central News & Network – ITDC India ePress | ITDC News, Bhopal: Mumbai. The death of an 18-month-old girl in the Goregaon area of Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, has raised serious questions about growing aggression and violent behaviour among children. According to police, the child died after falling from the sixth floor of her building on October 14. During the investigation, CCTV footage surfaced in which a 10-year-old girl living in the neighbourhood is allegedly seen dropping the child into a duct near the lift. Police have registered a murder case against the girl. However, the legal process in the matter is continuing.

Why can children become violent at a young age? According to experts, there is no single reason behind violent behaviour in children. Several factors can affect a child’s behaviour, including quarrels at home, physical or emotional abuse, bullying at school, neglect, excessive stress and exposure to violent content. Some children find it difficult to control their emotions and express anger in the right way.

Which warning signs should not be ignored? Repeated episodes of extreme anger, threats to hurt others, cruelty towards animals, violent reactions to minor issues or a steady increase in aggressive behaviour can be signs of concern. However, a child cannot be considered to have a mental illness on the basis of just one behaviour.

Timely help is necessary. Parents and teachers should pay attention to sudden changes in children’s behaviour. It is important to speak to the child calmly, understand their distress and provide a safe environment at home. If a child repeatedly tries to harm themselves or others, a child psychologist or mental health expert should be consulted. Timely identification and appropriate support can help manage behavioural problems.
