CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Rabi Lamichhane Reclaims RSP Leadership, Demands Reinstatement as MP
After spending nearly three months in judicial custody over a cooperative scam, former Deputy Prime Minister Rabi Lamichhane was released and on Tuesday officially resumed leadership of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). He also met with the Speaker of the House, demanding that his suspended parliamentary membership be reinstated.
Lamichhane had resigned from his party leadership following his arrest in the cooperative scam. Now, after being granted bail from five different district courts, he has been reinstated as party president.
Speaking to the media after reassuming leadership, Lamichhane alleged that he was framed as part of a conspiracy by the ruling coalition. He described his release and political return as a significant victory despite the challenges. He claimed several efforts were made to break his party, but RSP leaders and MPs stood by him, defeating what he called a government-led conspiracy.
Lamichhane also criticized the government for excluding RSP from the all-party meeting held on Monday, stating that Congress and UML were falsely accusing his party of supporting monarchy. Taking a dig at senior leaders of major parties, he said, “Democracy does not mean Deuba-ism or Oli-ism.” He emphasized that his party believes in true democracy and will not bow to the systems led by Deuba or Oli.
Shortly after taking charge, Lamichhane, along with senior party leaders and MPs, met with the Speaker of the House and formally requested the reinstatement of his MP status, arguing that since he has already been granted bail by the courts, his parliamentary membership should also be restored. RSP members have urged the Speaker for an early decision on the matter.
