CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Department of Life Sciences at Rabindranath Tagore University organized a one-day workshop on the topic “Plant Herbarium Techniques.” The objective of this workshop was to familiarize undergraduate and postgraduate students with the scientific methods of plant preservation, collection, pressing, and herbarium preparation.
The chief guest and expert of the workshop, Professor Pooja Singh (Botany), Government P.G. College, Begumganj (Raisen), delivered a theoretical lecture on “Herbarium Techniques” during the inaugural session. She elaborated on the definition, construction process, utility, and structure of herbariums. Students were introduced to crucial steps such as plant collection, pressing, drying, mounting, and labeling. She also discussed the diverse uses of herbariums in academics, industry, medicine, agriculture, environmental studies, and research.
Dr. Singh further shed light on the process of seed bank creation, sharing detailed insights into seed selection, collection, processing, and storage. She emphasized the importance of choosing healthy mother plants, proper collection timing, drying methods, and advanced storage techniques.
The session was attended by Dr. Poorvi Bhardwaj, Dean, Faculty of Science, Dr. Ankit Agrawal, Head of Life Sciences Department, Mrs. Madhu Mishra, Dr. Kusum Sharma, Dr. Keshum Lebanon, and all members of the science faculty.
In the second session, Dr. Pooja Singh and Dr. Suchi Modi provided hands-on training on practical herbarium preparation methods. Students actively participated in the process of creating herbarium sheets themselves.
The workshop was coordinated by Dr. Suchi Modi. Through this initiative, students gained both theoretical and practical knowledge of scientific plant collection and herbarium creation. The workshop significantly enhanced participants’ interest and confidence in field botany, taxonomy, and research.
