CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Rahul seen with Tricolour, Priyanka also takes part in protest
New Delhi. MPs of the INDIA bloc staged a protest in Delhi on Tuesday against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the special intensive revision of the electoral rolls. Police stopped the march, which was moving from Parliament towards the Election Commission office, by putting up barricades near Parliament Street. Opposition MPs then began a sit-in at the spot.
During the protest, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi climbed onto a police barricade and was seen holding the Tricolour. Several opposition leaders, including Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were present with him. Rahul Gandhi was also holding a poster that read: “Gyanesh, it’s done bro!” He also reiterated on social media his demand for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. Leaders of the Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party and Left parties also joined the protest. After stopping the march from moving ahead, police detained several leaders and MPs. According to reports, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other leaders were later released from police detention.
Opposition parties have alleged that the electoral roll revision process raises questions related to transparency and voters’ rights. The Election Commission has said the purpose of the revision is to remove duplicate and ineligible entries from the voter list and ensure the registration of eligible voters. The political dispute over the issue continues. Security was stepped up in central Delhi during the protest and barricades were placed at several locations. Amid police action, opposition MPs demanded that they be allowed to continue their march to the Election Commission.
