New Delhi. Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s proposed visit to Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi on October 28 was cancelled. He was scheduled to meet students protesting to demand the restoration of student union elections. Security arrangements had been tightened outside the campus ahead of his visit. Meanwhile, the situation remained sensitive because of tension and incidents linked to protests at the university.
Students at Jamia have been agitating for the past several days, demanding the restoration of student union elections. The students say student union elections have not been held in the university for a long time and that they need an elected representative platform to take their problems to the administration. The protesters are also demanding that a definite timeline for elections be announced and that disciplinary action taken against students during the agitation be withdrawn.
In an order issued on October 26, the university administration had said elections would be held within 15 days of approval of the student union constitution. The administration had also assured withdrawal of suspensions and show-cause notices issued during the agitation and the formation of a committee to examine the conduct of security personnel. However, students continued to seek clarity on the election date and process.
On October 28, the university administration also made allegations of vandalism on the campus and damage to the gate and CCTV system. Amid these incidents, security arrangements were tightened further. Police put up barricades around the university gates, and reports also emerged that some student activists had been detained.
With Rahul Gandhi’s visit cancelled, his proposed meeting with the protesting students could not take place. Amid the continuing dispute at the university, student union elections, campus security, and talks between the administration and protesters remain crucial to the situation ahead.
