CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has questioned Union Home Minister Amit Shah over women’s safety in Delhi following the alleged gang rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl in the national capital.
Gandhi said in a social media post that Delhi Police functions under the Union Home Ministry and asked who should be held responsible for women’s safety in the capital. He demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible, strict legal action and accountability for what he described as criminal negligence.
According to police, the teenager was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered, and her body was later found in an open field in the Swaroop Nagar area. Four suspects, including three minors and a 19-year-old man, have been apprehended in connection with the case. Police said the investigation is continuing to establish the individual roles of the suspects and examine forensic evidence.
Gandhi also questioned the functioning of the Delhi Police and called for greater accountability in cases involving crimes against women. He said that ensuring women’s safety was essential for the country’s progress.
The incident has triggered political discussion over women’s safety, policing and accountability in Delhi, with opposition leaders seeking action against those accused in the case.
