CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: In a significant move following the tragic death of a teenager in Thane, the Railway Board has approved the installation of automatic doors in Mumbai’s suburban local trains. The decision aims to enhance passenger safety and prevent fatal accidents due to overcrowding and open doors, a longstanding issue in Mumbai’s high-density local train network.

The tragedy in Thane reignited public outrage and demands for improved safety measures in the city’s lifeline—the local trains. Responding swiftly, the Railway Board has decided to implement automatic door systems in select trains, starting with the newly introduced air-conditioned rakes. Officials stated that the initiative will be gradually expanded across the suburban network, prioritizing high-risk and high-traffic routes.

This initiative marks a shift towards modernization and commuter safety in India’s busiest suburban railway system. Mumbai’s locals carry over 70 lakh passengers daily, and the introduction of automated doors could significantly reduce injuries and deaths caused by falls or overcrowding.

The Railway Board’s decision is seen as a necessary step to align with global railway safety standards. Commuters and safety advocates have welcomed the move, though they stress the need for faster implementation and integration with existing infrastructure.
